On March 1, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai with Malaysian Supreme Head of State Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.

Wen said China-Malaysia relations are showing a good momentum of development at present. Bilateral cooperation keeps deepening. It is the consensus of leaders from both countries and the common aspiration of both peoples to enhance China-Malaysia friendship and expand mutually beneficial cooperation. Malaysia is a close neighbor of China and the two countries enjoy substantial common interests. China would like to be a good friend of mutual trust and a good partner of reciprocal cooperation for Malaysia forever in the principle of "being a good neighbor and partner".

When talking about China-Malaysia economic and trade relations, Wen said with the dramatic expansion of trade between China and Malaysia in recent years, Malaysia has become an important trading partner for China. The two countries have conducted productive cooperation in agriculture, high-tech, resources development and tourism. China is satisfied with the positive development in bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Wen stressed China and Malaysia enjoy respective economic advantages and great potentials for cooperation. He hoped the two sides can grasp opportunity and deepen cooperation so as to bring more visible benefits to the people of both countries.

Wen highly appraised China-ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) relations, noting that substantive development was achieved in China-ASEAN relations last year. The two sides established strategic partnership oriented to peace and prosperity, and launched the process of setting a bilateral free trade area in an overall manner. Malaysia is to assume the rotating presidency of ASEAN and we would like to cooperate closely with Malaysia to consolidate China-ASEAN strategic partnership and uplift bilateral cooperation to a new high.

Sirajuddin said friendly exchanges between Malaysia and China can be traced back to several hundred years ago and currently bilateral relations remain close. Malaysia firmly upholds the one-China policy and is committed to continuously enhancing Malaysia-China cooperative relations of mutual respect, mutual benefits and friendship. He said Malaysia-China economic and trade relations are developing rapidly and it is very likely for bilateral trade volume to exceed the grand objective of 50 billion US dollars by 2010. The business community in Malaysia is adopting an active attitude toward enhancing bilateral economic and trade exchanges and would like to cooperate with China in a third country in such areas as construction and energy.
