Premier Wen Jiabao Meets ROK, Philippine, Japanese, Malaysian and Thai Leaders.
On October 7, 2003, Premier Wen Jiabao met with ROK President Roh Moo-hyun, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro, Malaysian
Prime Minister Datuk Mahathir and Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on separate occasions at Bali, Indonesia.
When meeting with Roh Moo-hyun, Wen said the announcement of establishing a cooperative partnership by China and the ROK earlier this year has significant importance in further
strengthening the Sino-South Korean cooperation. He also expressed his satisfaction with the development of relations between China and the ROK.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Korean nuclear issue. Wen indicated that the six-party talks in Beijing is an important step towards a peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. However, the issue is very complicated and therefore a final solution takes time, patience and wisdom. A peaceful settlement to the issue through negotiations is the only right choice and this should not be changed whatever difficulties appear.
Roh said great achievements were made during his visit to China in July, adding that the ROK side is earnest in implementing bilateral cooperation in the listed ten areas. He also noted that the ROK government and people are grateful to China for its positive contribution to seeking a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. Meanwhile, Roh gave a high appraisal of the constructive role China has played in maintaining peace and development in Asia.
When meeting with Koizumi, Wen said the Sino-Japanese relations have ushered in a new important phase of development and the Chinese government is willing to develop a long-term stable relationship of good neighborliness with Japan.
Wen stressed that right cognition and judgment of history is the
key to the smooth development of the Sino-Japanese relations. He noted that the two countries should stick to the view of taking the history as a mirror and facing the future on the basis of China-Japan Joint Declaration and other documents. At present, the Japanese side should consider and properly handle the matter of abandoned chemical weapons left in China by the Japanese aggressing army during the World War II.
Koizumi said both China and Japan have conducted a series of activities commemorating the 25thanniversary of the signing of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship, noting that bilateral relations have been further consolidated and developed. He said that Japan is willing to continue cooperative and friendly relations in all fields with China and the Japanese government will properly deal with incidents resulted from the Japanese abandoned chemical weapons, in which Chinese people were victimized.
When meeting with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Wen expressed his satisfaction with the stable development of bilateral relations. He said that China and the Philippines enjoy great economic complementarity and should continue to expand economic and trade cooperation, especially in fishing and agriculture. He also expressed appreciation to the Philippine government for its adherence to the One China policy.
Also expressing satisfaction over the smooth development of bilateral relations, Arroyo thanked China for its precious assistance in agriculture, fishing and infrastructure, hoping that the two countries' cooperation can expand into more areas.
In the meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir, Wen said Mahathir has made important contribution to the fast and comprehensive development of exchange and cooperation in all
fields between China and Malaysia in recent years. The two countries should continue to support and coordinate with each other on regional and international affairs to make more efforts in strengthening South-South cooperation.
Mahathir said that maintaining a friendly relationship with China is in the interests of the Malaysian people and the Malaysian government will not change the policy. He stressed that the development of China will not pose any threat, but will be conducive to peace and prosperity of Asia and the world.
While meeting with Thai Prime Minister Thaksin, Wen said that the strategic cooperative relations between China and Thailand have achieved fruitful results. The agreement signed by the two countries on removing tariffs on vegetables and fruits have taken effect on Oct. 1, which marks an important progress in establishing China-ASEAN free trade area.
Thaksin said Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej and the Thai people are looking forward to the state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao, adding that he is very pleased with the implementation of the agreement, which he believes will bring benefit to both countries and will be helpful to promoting the economic and trade relations between Thailand and China..
